Breaking Outlaw News

Outlaws Invading Ephrata Wa.

The Bad Boys of the NW are ready to show what Independence weekend is all about July 5th as the NW Outlaw Street Stocks prepare to show what Independence is all about at the high banked 1/4 mile oval of Ephrata Raceway Park. Make know mistakes when the NW Outlaw Street Stocks come to town you are always going to get plenty of action as they rip there way around the track at speeds that are unheard of in the Street Stock scene. Gary Homad #6 of East Wenatchee Wa. is the current points leader for 2008 and is coming in looking to make it two wins in a row as he picked up his first win of the season last race at Yakima Speedway. Josh Wilson of Arlington Wa. is now up to 2nd in points how he got to this point is a unusual set of circumstances as he and veteran Outlaw Everett Wa driver Gary Flammang teamed up for 2008. Gary needed to take the season off and he found his car sitting empty and needing a driver for his potent race ready #91 Camaro. Gary got on the phone with Josh who Gary had built a friendship up after Josh had come into the Outlaw series then ended up buying one of Gary's older cars and Josh showed his talents off right away with the older car picking up his 1st outlaw win right off the bat and getting Gary's attention from there on its was like it was meant to be as they now make there run for the 2008 championship. Byron Goetz, Mitch Kleyn, Michael Knutson round out the top 5 and are all still in striking distance Knutson Lost his motor at the last race while he was the points leader and is working hard to get another motor together in time for ERP. Dave Lund the only 2 time NW Outlaw Street Stock Series Champion is running in 6th place this season and it has been full of trials and tribulations even just as recently as the last race at Yakima as Dave who was having a good run had mechanical issues that cost him another great finish, Dave is one to look out for coming into ERP as he is always a contender to stick it into victory lane. Don't miss the action this Saturday night and find out is it going to be a local ERP driver in victory lane or will one of the NW Outlaws prevail ?

Gary Homad Takes Yakadega Nu-tread 50

Malaga Washington's Gary Homad driving his McMullen Orchards 1989 Chevy Camaro drove a great race Saturday night at the series longest stop of the 1/2 mile of Yakima Speedway known to the veteran drivers as the Yakadega of the NW. Gary started off the night by setting fast time with a blistering time of 21:394 around the 1/2 mile. The officials drew for the invert and much to the disappointment of Homad the invert was a eye popping 10 cars which sent him back to the outside of the 5th row for the start of the A main event. The race began with 18 cars taking the green flag after losing 2 cars earlier in the night both blowing up motors they were #15 Points leader Michael Knutson and last season champion #41 Kevin Carver. The first 25 laps were pretty mellow but then things got interesting with 2 time outlaw champion #10 Dave Lund having to exit the track with either a tranny issue or motor issue with smoke just bellowing from his Black & Gold Camaro. Next up with problems was NW legend and veteran outlaw driver Mike Easley losing a tire and having to retire to the pits for the evening. Lap 40 strolled around and #25 Bob Greiner of East Wenatchee had moved up from his 9th starting spot and had built up a large lead of a 1/4 track but misery set in on him with a right front tire letting go and sending him into the wall he was not hurt but it ended his night. Lap 41 didn't want to be outdone by lap 40 so we would now see the #97 of Josh Ingram blow up his car and bring out a caution forcing the outlaws into a shootout finish but now Homad had taken over the top spot and was not going to give it up and he put the peddle down on the green and all the other drivers could do was hang on and try to finish out the race as the checkered flag flew it was All Gary Homad followed by 2nd place Josh The Hammer Wilson driving the Gary Flammang 2007 Camaro out of Everett Wa. & finishing 3rd was Flying Bryan Grant from Tacoma Wa. 4th place went to 2008 Rookie of the Year Contender Roger Drake from Arlington Wa. in his 1970 Camaro 5th went to #1 Mitch Klyen.

Bryon Goetz Picks Up His 2nd
NW Outlaw Win At Wenatchee Valley Super Oval

The NW Outlaw Street Stocks took to the Wenatchee Valley Super Oval for race #4 of the 12 race season and as always the Outlaw left the fans begging for them to come back again. The weather was clear and cold but the real surprise was the wind as throughout the day and evening the winds were blowing hard and steady and with gusts to as high as 45 mph. First up was time trials and Local Wenatchee Driver #25 Bob Greiner set a blistering pace with a 14.567 to take the fast time. The Main event rolled around and 19 Outlaw Street Stocks where looking great the cars were screaming around the track until lap 16 when the #91 driving by Josh Wilson and owned by Gary Flammang out of Everett Wa. blew the motor to bring out the yellow but not before the #12 of Rick Villyard in his Camaro out of Kent Wa and the #12x of Rick Bretches and his Camaro out of Ephrata Wa. got caught up in the oil and collected each other ending the night for both with disappointing finishes of 15th and 16th. The race resumed after a clean up of debris and oil. Green flag comes back out and a brand new out record is set that has stood since the beginning of the series the outlaws ran the next and final 59 laps without a single caution that brought out a new problem with drivers running lots of camber and this time it caught up to a lot of drivers after building up all of those green flag laps drivers began to push the heat in the tires further then they could handle and flat tires began and top drivers like Dave Lund, Jason Ogle & a few others who had good runs going had there night turn disappointing. The original finish of the main had Kevin Carver taking home the win but after the race was over he didn't pass the post race tech and was dropped to the last spot and all the hard work, great driving & patience paid off big-time for Byron Goetz Okanogan Wa. in his 1978 Chevrolet Camaro getting his 2nd NW Outlaw Street Stock main event win.

Next up for the Outlaws is the biggy of the season they will make big changes to there cars and gears and scream onto the 1/2 mile at Yakima Speedway on June 21st. This is the fastest and largest track the series goes to and its a race not to miss. If you haven't seen a outlaw race then mark it down as this is the one not to miss cause it will have it all with wild looking cars and speeds that make you not want to blink afraid you might miss some of the great non-stop action.

LOCALS HAVE GREAT SHOWING AT 2008 SPUD CUP

(Ephrata, WA) 5/24/08 by Kelly Hart

Main Event Winner Michael Knutson In His Custom Built #15 1978 Chevy Camaro

It was a great night to be from Quincy, Washington if you were racing in the 2008 Spud Cup Northwest Outlaw Street Stock race at Ephrata Raceway Park. Quincy's Michael Knutson, sped around Spanaway’s Kevin Carver on the 52nd lap and then pulled away for his first NWOSS win and the 2008 Spud Cup trophy. Quincy driver Mitch Kleyn was second and Kevin Carver was third.

The race started off with Seattle driver Rick Villyard holding down the top spot while the field of 21 cars fell in behind. The battle up front featured Villyard, Carver, Knutson and Kleyn almost from the start. The first caution came on the second lap for a spin in turn two which piled up a few cars and bent some sheet metal and fiberglass on quite a few cars. The restart say Villyard pull away, while other battled behind. Spirited battles ensued all over the high banked quarter mile with the second caution flying on lap 14 when Aaron Nevers of Spokane hit the front stretch wall. Carver got by Villyard on the restart only to see Knutson, Kleyn, Wenatchee’s Chad Holaday and Othello’s Bart Hector freight train the #12 car for position send Villyard backward. On the 26th lap, East Wenatchee driver Bob Greiner cut a right front tire nearly ending with him in the front stretch wall. The field bunched up again on the restart with Knutson and Kleyn dogging Carver lap after lap until they hit heavy traffic. Knutson used a slight Carver bobble to get by and take over the lead.

Two more cautions kept the win in suspense. On the 62nd lap Dustin Kagele from Ephrata and Villyard bounced off each other going down the back stretch ending each others evening. And on the 67th lap Jared Ingram spun heading down the back straightaway for the final caution. From there on out it was Knutson, Kleyn, Carver, Hector and Holaday for the top five.

Winning the two heat races were Knutson and Eric Hector of Ephrata. The B Main event was won by Nevers. Four trophy dashes were run, the winners were Bill Rutherford of Moses Lake, Roger Drake of Seattle, Knutson and Kleyn. Fast time honors were taken by Mike Easley of Tumwater with a lap of 15.33 seconds.

The Spud Cup was started in 1990 I believe , as a open invitation to street stocks from all over the northwest and grew to be the biggest street stock race of the year. During the change of ownership/promoters at ERP over the years the Spud Cup was lost in the shuffle for a few years until 2003 when ERP and the NWOSS brought it back.

Past Winners 2003 to 2007 :

Points leader Mike Knutson, of Quincy, is coming off a great third place finish at WVSO and is excited to be heading west.
" We love to go to South Sound, my best career finish was there and the facility is first class."

Dave "MR Street Stock" Lund won race one and will try for two in a row and move up in the points, but the Wenatchee based trio of Chad Holaday, Gary Homad, and Jason Ogle round out the top five and have other plans for Mr Lund.

Returning to the series is Brad Borton of Graham. The former NWOSS Champion will be leading a strong contingent of local Outlaws waiting for the Bandits from the east. A field of at least twenty five cars is expected to challenge for the $700 first place check in the Rochester Rumble 75.
